How To Wash Your Hands In This Age of Coronavirus Disease

If you visit the website of the World Health Organization(WHO) and have listened to the various Presidential Media Briefing by the World powers; President Donald Trump (USA), Prime Minister Boris Johnson (UK) and chief of health matters in each country- they all seem to agree on one thing which is washing your hands frequently with soap or alcohol-based hand wash.

The purpose of washing hands is to ensure that you don’t infect yourself when you touch your nose, mouth, and eyes with your hands.

But really, how many people have explained how to wash our hands?

Hence, the essence of this article.

Before digging in, you need to ensure that your hands are thoroughly washed when:

  • you get back into your house from spending time outside, e.g arriving from work
  • you sneeze or cough
  • Eat or handle food or
  • Blow your nose

Furthermore, the United Kingdom National Health Service has advised that hands are washed for at least 20 seconds with soap water. Believe me, you should set a timer if that’s what it takes to stay protected from COVID-19. It is advisable not to wash your hands with alcohol or chlorine without professional insights so as not to hurt yourself or your kids.

Running water.

It is preferable to wash your hands under clean running water. This washes the specks of dirt, bacterias, and viruses off better than when washing your hand in a bowl with water.

How to rub.

This is not the time to simply place your hands under running water and after 2seconds take them away and dry them with a towel. You need to take the time to rub your palms together with a soap that lathers.

Then rub the back of your hands and in between your fingers with soap. Use your left fingers to scrub the surface of your right palm and vice versa.

It is also important to wash your fingers and the back of your fingers.

Remember that protection through hand washing is more effective when it is done under clean running water.

Hand sanitisers should also be handy during times when you have to leave the house or after using the toilet, sneezing or coughing.

We appreciate the efforts of Medical experts, researchers, and the World Health Organization. In times like this only you can protect yourself, family, and friends more than the government because it is not impossible that you will know people who are nonchalant about taking Health tips and concerns seriously.
