As we crawl closer to the end of 2022, here are five art events you should attend. Arteasy Nigeria puts together five of the best art shows ongoing or scheduled to commence in 2022.

ADETOLA WEWE solo exhibition at Thought Pyramid Art Centre Lagos

Thought Pyramid Art Centre starting from Saturday, October 22- Tuesday, November 22, 2022, will be exhibiting 60 artworks by the acclaimed African artist Adetola Wewe at its gallery branch at 96 Norman Williams Street, Ikoyi, Lagos State.

The show which is a solo exhibition of 50 Adetola Wewe’s paintings and 10 terracottas is titled Metamodern Vision: A Retrospective Exhibition of Tola Wewe’s Work. The show according to the Thought Pyramid Art Centre Lagos exhibition director and curator Ovie Omatsola is meant to tell the journey of Adetola Wewe’s artistic career which is over 4 decades. 

The exhibition will include an exhibition of Adetola Wewe’s oldest work of art and the launch of the latest book written by Professor Moyosore B Okedeji on the artist. Follow Thought Pyramid Art Lagos on IG for more information.

SPOTLIGHT exhibition featuring Bruce Onobrakpeya

Initiated in 2022, Spotlight Arts and Artists Review is an episodic monthly gallery show organized by Nike Art Gallery in Lagos in partnership with first-class art consultancy foundation Artegun. The event which happens on the last Sunday of every month is set to exhibit the divergent works of the maestro Bruce Onobrakpeya and the resting virtuoso sculptor, Prince Victor Osazuwa. 

The September episode has been scheduled to start from Sunday, September 25th to Saturday 1st of October 2022 at Nike Art Gallery in Ikate Lekki in Lagos State. The show which took off in January with the display of works by Tolu Aliki featured the paintings and wood-like metal sculptures of Adeleke Akeem and Ibie Blessing respectively in August. 

According to Yusuf Durodola, the founder of Artegun and curator of the show, the goal of Spotlight Arts and Artists Review by Nike Art Gallery is to reveal an abundance of works in the presumed largest gallery in Africa that most likely have not been seen by visitors. It is also an opportunity to create familiarity between the artists and the gallery visitors who have only seen art pieces by an artist but can’t recognize them. 

Like the works of Bruce Onobrakpeya and Prince Victor Osazuwa, only works in the collection of the iconic African art ambassador Chief Mrs. Nike Okundaye are exhibited during the event. Spectacular artists such as Adeola Balogun, Ernest Nkwocha, and Rom Isichei, amongst others have been shortlisted for Spotlight Arts and Artists Review by Nike Art Gallery in the coming months of October, November, and December 2022.

NO PAIN NO GAIN featuring Dotun Popoola

Starting from Saturday, September 24- Saturday, October 8, 2022, the Vivid Exclusive Art Gallery will feature Dotun Popoola, Obeka Simon, and Timi Kakandar amongst others in a 15-man contemporary group exhibition. The artists will be sharing their musings in the exhibition titled No Pain, No Gain. 

According to the gallery’s CEO, the art event has a surprise package in the bag for emerging artists. Another side attraction is the confirmation of Chief Mrs. Nike Okundaye as a guest speaker at the event. 

The gallery defends the title of the exhibition by mixing masters of art in Nigeria with rapidly evolving artists. The 15 artists are Sam Ebohon, Ato Arinze, Silas Adeoye, Damola Adepoju, Dotun Popoola, Timi Kakandar, Felix Aina, Chukwuemeka Osisiego, Aladejare Ayodeji, Damilola Okhoya, Jideonwor Gabriel, Adebayo David, Aidelokha Iziogba, Ibie blessing, and Obeka Simon. 

ART X LAGOS 7th Edition

Finally, Art X Lagos is here for another art, music, and networking edition. The remarkable art fair in the early days of September shared that Art X Lagos 7th Edition will commence on Friday, November 4- Sunday, November 6, 2022. 

The extraordinary art fair will be exhibiting works by over 100 artists represented by 31 galleries from across Africa and the world. Out of Africa, Kó, Nike Art Gallery, and Kanbi Projects amongst other constant and new art establishments will be presented at the Federal Palace Hotel, Victoria Island Lagos. 

The event founded by Tokini Peterside Schwebig in 2016 is the first of its kind art fair in West Africa with a uniquely designed art experience that accommodates and beats the expectations of Nigerians, Africans, and its international audience. After 6 years, Art X Lagos has welcomed 83,000 attendees to Lagos, Nigeria, and Africa from all over the world with a reach that surpasses over 3 billion. 

Unarguably, it is the most anticipated art exhibition in Nigeria and most likely in Africa. 

NEXT OF KIN 5th Edition

Thought Pyramid Art Centre is set to call for up-and-coming artists to submit applications for the Next of Kin Series 5 in October 2022. After a pioneering and successful Series 4, the household art competition and exhibition for emerging artists whose careers aren’t more than 8 years get ready for a bigger Series 5. 

The Next of Kin 5th Edition application will run from Saturday 1st October -Tuesday 15th November 2022. The selection of finalists in December 2022 will be followed up with a press conference announcing the finalists in January 2023. The art exhibition of the selected Ten Finalists should be launched in March 2023. 

It is one of the most anticipated art competitions in Nigeria. It is associated with offering wide publicity for its participants. The art competition and exhibition have aided the transcendence of such talents as Antonia Nneji, Ikechukwu Ezeigwe, Christian Allison, and Adefemi Olalekan who are the Series 1,2,3, and 4 winners respectively.
